Coraline

This movie was great its a story of Coraline a girl who moved to a new home. She goes out the first day because wanted to look for a well. so she grabs a dowsing rod (its poison oak) and starts looking. She meets this kids named Whyborn (not kidding thats his name) who comes running up to her in a creepy mask on a bike with motor sounds. After this she goes home and finds a door behind the wall paper. She has her mom get the key and open the door but nothing was there just some bricks. That night she see a mouse and she follows it (what could go wrong) the mouse takes her to the door behind the wallpaper. She opens it to a different world the world is full of her favorite things her parents aren't to busy with their work. Its her wonderland. Its a great movie about would you want what you have with your family or a world that seems to perfect. Its a great movie if you like something that is a bit out there or a bit weird I recommend this. The story is great, the characters are great, everything in this movie is great if you don't mind doing some digging to get everything in this movie.

Gravity Falls

This show I heard of and thought, "You know what lets give it a shot." I did not disappoint its about the Pines twins Mabel, and Dipper. They go to this town called Gravity Falls to live with the Gruncle (Great Uncle) Stan and what they thought to be a boring summer was anything but. Dipper finds this book with a golden six fingered hand on it with the number 3. He looks through and finds out that Gravity Fall might not be so boring after all. looking through the book he finds stuff on monsters that are said to be in this town. In the first episode Mabel brings a boy back to the house and he says his name was Norm after a while Dipper looks in to Norm and records him and Mabel together. When he starts to think he was normal in one video his hand falls off and he puts it back on. Later they find out the were gnomes (even though he looked like a zombie). Mabel and Dipper have to run from these guys because they are trying to kidnap Mabel so she can be there queen. This is the first episode its awesome my favorite thing about this show is how a show for kids a college student in a department all about story telling can enjoy this show. The story is light hearted for the kids but creepy and dark enough for me to stay interested, not to mention it has one of my favorite villains ever. But I love this show and if it being a kids show is turning you away give it a chance you might be surprised.

D-frag

This show is... This show is...
This show is crazy and I love it. the main character Kenji is a guy who gets caught up in the Game Creation Club. Its has 3 other members Roka the leader, Chitose, and Sakura. All of the character are weird in there own way, they all have a element they "control" really they just throw it at someone. Chitose uses "earth", Sakura uses "water", and Roka uses "fire" and she has a "dark magic attack" (she puts a bag on their head). The show follows them while they go through school and the wacky club events. This show is odd to say the least but you like the characters so you want to watch the craziness happen. They hold a contest with the other Game Creation Club (the other one makes video games the 1st on makes games that don't need anything or board games) they want to see who get more people to go to a show case of there games (guess who wins). They have a huge game that everyone joins in to win a bag. They also get challenged by the student council and play a game where you try to steal the other persons phone and answer the question on the phone if they do they are out. Its crazy but there is a character you are bound to like I recommend this anime.

Kingdom hearts

Kingdom Hearts is what happens when final fantasy and Disney have a child add some awesome characters then you get this game. This game is about Sora a kid who is part of a world similar to ours. Him and his friends, Riku and Kairi they plan to set sail and find new worlds. But there plans were cut short, these dark creatures called heartless appear, Sora gets the sword called a KeyBlade when this big ball of darkness swallows up Sora, Riku and Kairi. Then Sora wakes up in Traverse Town a town were all sorts of characters live, Sora starts to look around and meets this man named Leon (Squall from final fantasy 8) he knocks Sora out. After that Leon takes him to his home to explain to him what the KeyBlade is, he tells him this is the only way to beat the heartless. Sora set off to hunt heartless and before he leaves for the next world he meets Donald and Goofy (yes from Disney) they travel from world to world trying to find Riku and Kairi. This is how the game starts you have to find your friends you travel to many different Disney worlds. The adventure Sora takes is tough but he wants to find his friends and go home. My biggest problem with the game is that its a "My friends are my power" or "I got my friends" type of story. But other than that its beautiful its a game that kids to adults can enjoy.

broadcasting (3 of 3)

Broadcasting is the newest part of the DMA department and the smallest (I think there are around 16 of us). I've already learned a lot of the behind the scene stuff being a part of it. Radio is where my heart but the news I help when ever they need it. The thing I learned is that if it seems just saying whats on the top of there head its probably written down for them read. New has the teleprompter and the radio we have a sheet of paper with what we will say or notes on it. With the radio I am doing more of the production side of things, making commercial, or anything the station. there are a lot of behind the scene like a film shoot it takes a team to get anything do we just have shorter deadlines. Its fun I love doing it and sound is what I like to think what I'm good with. The DMA is full of story-tellers, we find the story in anything we can, that's something not everyone can do and each part has a way they can tell a story.

Broadcasting (2 of 3)

The next type of broadcasting I would like to talk about is the new. This is where we get information for the day (besides Facebook). It shows the stories in our area, in our nation, and in our world. The news has to go out and find the story in the area of the station, its a different from the film side of things. Both have to go and get the footage and make the story with B-roll and the film, but the broadcasting use it for more telling the story of a person in real life with interviews, and film does more a telling a story through characters and a world they are in. The News uses the story they get to inform there viewers. The news sometimes gets a bad rap because a lot of it seems negative, but the news people would be looking for is the stuff that they should know about, the things that they should be worried about. There is a negative but people forget there is positive on the news, they just see the things they don't want to see. Next blog will be broadcasting in general.

Broadcasting Media (1 of 3)

When you think of Digital Media Arts broadcasting doesn't usually come up so I want to talk about broadcasting. I want to work a radio station as the on-air personality (DJ), Production, Program or director. It has a different type of work than others because you have to tell a story without visuals. This semester I have been making a bunch of stuff for our station (105.5) these things called sweepers. A sweeper is a 7 to 12-second commercial, when you hear the stations name or a sponsor for the station that's a sweeper. The don't take long to make but usually, you have to make a bunch at a time. This is a form of media that you don't think of its the conversation we try to have with a listener, the stuff we pump out to fill in the time between songs. It is all stuff to give you Information for the day in about 30 seconds and depending, where you work how to say it, we right almost a script for it. One thing I learned is you can never be too prepared the radio, might seem like it's just off the wall but it takes preparation. I will talk about the other type of broadcasting we do here at Huntington, News and how its part of media. then I'll explain the broadcasting in general.

Plot armor

I have been watching a lot of movies and anime I have been seeing something they all have. Its this thing called plot armor its not in everything  but its still there to a degree. It's when the plot won't let the characters die, usually for the main character or important character is near death and then they
say that their friends are their power, or the say this isn't my final form. Its more of a thing in anime but its in comics to when the character would die the get resurrected. Now I won't say its bad if you have a main character you don't want them to die right away. But there are some points its not so good. Its a topic people throw around when they think a character should die but end up pulling something out of nowhere to finish the fight. But there are many way to get around it in some shows
there is no such thing as a safe character Akame Ga Kill anyone can die no matter what, Game of Thrones no one is safe in that world (according to what people have told me). There are ways to avoid plot armor I dont mind that its there as long as it doesn't draw way the crowd.

Video Games Story-telling (2 of 2)

In this one I'm going to talk more about playing a game were you almost playing a movie.
I talking about undertale, this game is a movie with a bunch of ending. Pacifist, True Pacifist, Genocide, or Neutral, all these ending have a deep story to them (if you haven't played the game I recommend it). The main idea of the game is your a human kid who fell in the underground. you go to the first door you see and a flower is there to greet you his name is Flowey. He wants to show you how this world works he shoots some "friendliness pellets" that he wants you to grab. You grab one and drop to 1 HP he tells you in this world its "kill or be killed" then as he about kills you Toriel, a goat like monster in the underground comes and saves you. She teaches you how the underground works not combat but the puzzles and tricks in the ruins. Here is where your first choice is made if you kill everything in the ruins till when you enter combat it says "and no one came" you start the genocide, or you if you don't kill anything your on your way to the pacifist. This game has a lot of choices that have to be made do you kill or not do you become friends with monsters or their enemy. but everything goes in the same order no matter how many times you play.
This is a way different way of telling a story then Shadow of the Colossus you start to feel for the characters you want to help them. But there is still that side of you that's curious you want to know what happened if you killed all of them instead. So you start over and kill everyone so no one is left in the underground. after you do that you are left with a question... Erase the world or reset. if you Erase the world you game crashes if you open it back up it says "you erased this world why do you want to go back" It lets you play again the only difference is that the true Pacifist ending changes. Or you can reset the character (I won't say the name because spoiler) they feel betrayed they were with you on this killing spree then they kill you game crashes and you can start a new game and same changes are there to the True Pacifist. It shows that the world will come back and bite you in the butt. I love this game and with this a Shadow of the Colossus it shows that games can have interesting stories if some love and hard work is put into them.

Video games storytelling (1 of 2)

I enjoy video games they have a way to tell a story that no other form can. It lets you put yourself in the shoes of the character by controlling his action. I'm going to talk about 2 of my favorite games just from the aspect of the story.
The first one is shadow of the colossus a game that the only enemy is a giant (you guessed) it colossi. you play as Wander a character who brings a girl who is unconscious to a alter to try and wake her up. The you have this god-like voice telling you that you have to kill 16 colossi. each one is different in its own way, the first one is to teach you how to play the game climb on his back and try and stab his head. The second one you learn how to fight on your horse agro. after that the game gets interesting, the colossi keep getting harder and harder you have to start using everything around you. And while you are killing colossi a huge story unfolds.
After you kill a colossi you get engulfed in darkness and get taken back to the room you left the girl with shadow people standing around you. (spoilers) After you kill the last colossus (super hard by the way) you get taken back to the room with the shadows around and they take over your body. they god-like voice you have been hearing was some evil spirit locked away. (watch the video if you want to see and it goes without saying SPOILERS). But this game has a beautiful story without much dialog at all. The dialog in the game is the voice telling you the next colossi but once the end hits the story hits you. You find out that the lands were cursed by the voice you just released.
this is a art form I would like to see more you don't think anything of this world at the beginning you just start killing colossi. then you see what you did and what happened to this land.
This is one of my favorite games but I want to talk about a different type of story-telling that a game can offer.

Shows we grew up with (2 of 2)

I talking about the effect of nostalgia.
I explained that the show we used to watch grow up with us and they are still good, but that's not always the case.
I tried to watch some shows from my childhood again, but I had to stop to protect my childhood.
For example Pokemon, I watched it as a kid and loved it, and now as a college student, I thought lets watch it again...
Bad idea it was an experience to say the least. I had the same problem with Yugioh I loved it but I can't watch it again it was bad.
And as much as I like Spongebob after the 2nd season is terrible and I remember enjoying it a lot
but I couldn't watch it again cause I don't want to ruin it for me.
So nostalgia is a thing where you can enjoy something again and again.
But its also a thing where it can scare you to watch some amazing stuff again cause you dont want to ruin it for yourself.

Shows we grow up on (1 of 2)

I want to talk about the idea of nostalgia.
I was a kid who loved cartoons I watched Looney tunes, Animaniacs, and Pokemon. All I watched at the time were great but some didn't age all that well.
some of my favorites I watched for example Looney Tunes was and still is great (not the new stuff)
and Scooby Doo again it was and still is great.
So a lot of the show's I grew up with were great and it's a sense of nostalgia for me.
When I watch some of these shows I used to watch again I feel like a kid again sitting in front of the tv waiting for the commercial to finish so I could get back to Teen Titans.
A lot of this was my childhood watching cartoons and having a good laugh at it.
So there is a good side of nostalgia the side that grew up with us and we can enjoy something over and over again.
And then there's the bad side which I will talk about in part two.

Sometimes the stars

This is a music video (I believe) that walks around with a little girl. The whole thing has no dialogue just music and the animation. But the story is great this little girl has a necklace that is a star with the light going out. I take this as losing this important part of her (hope, love, etc) and then she gets on a train. taking her to different places but she never gets off and then she's by herself. all these place where people get off where it didn't work for her (it didn't bring the light back). Then the train flies off the rail and down a cliff she falls and the train breaks around her. Its her falling deeper in this problem she has and finds herself all by herself no train. Then all of a sudden a light come out of no where and she see's a little girl sitting by herself who is covered in light and touches the star. Then they run off the screen and you don't see them anymore. I believe that little girl is what she was missing a friend who fell in the same pit she did and instead of lighting her star she sticks with her and then they go on their way. It's a beautiful story where you see someone break and fall apart and then someone coming up beside them in the same mess as them.

books to movies (part 3 of 3)

The next is the bad book to movie and that is the Maze Runner. Ok with this series I really like it the story, setting, character, and the development. But the movie started off good a few things here and there but then the mid point it change almost everything. (spoilers) In the movie all the grievers come and kill almost everyone only leaving in the morning. But in the book the doors stayed open for about 1 and half weeks and they killed one a night they hunted them down. I felt the book made it more terrifying because they didn't know who was going to die next. Then in the next one it wasn't maze runner anymore. But I will admit it was really well made the scenes with grievers or any monster were awesome but even if it wasn't maze runner the story was still confusing I didn't follow all the well. So this is what a book to a movie can do it can do awesome things if done right.

books to movies (part 2 of 3)

This one will shock a lot but Harry Potter as an ok book to movie. Don't get me wrong I really like the Harry Potter books and movies but after about the half way point, it started being ok. The books were great I really enjoy the idea of a world of magic (not that I want it just roll with it) and it being there. The books did that and so did the movies the big thing with it for both was after the goblet of fire it became the normal hero story. The movies were all good but the story became predictable and so did the book Harry had to go on a quest that was the rest .
so even books can be flawed but they still have a place in my heart. So this is a midway point of what a movie based on a book looks like if the books were good and the movies were good just had more flaws that brought it down on the scale.

books to movies (part 1 of 3)

I'm want to talk about the change for books to movies. People say that all movies that are based on books are not as good as the book. But from a story standpoint probably but thats only half the movie.
the production part of the movie might be beautiful but since its based on our "favorite" book it becomes a bad moive if the story isn't the exact same.
I'm going to use 3 different examples from each side the good, the bad, and the ok. I'll starts with the good Lord of the Rings. All of us have probably see or heard how great it was and still is. If you haven't seen it, its all about frodo and the fellowship of the ring trying to destroy the one ring to rule them all. These movies are amazing the story, music, and the setting were all great. I think the reason that we liked it so much that was because we had a epic adventure and it was made really well.
And I hear it was close to the book but it was super long they were all that way that would be my only problem.

Extraordinary Tales

This movie is a bunch of shorts about storys of death in someway shape or form. All the stories are from Edgar Allen Poe ("The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" and "The Masque of the Red Death.").
Before each tale a crow talks to the dead the crow is Poe he talking to the graves. After the first tale he gets asked the question why does he talk about death so much in his storys. Then what about what he hopes to acomplish.
Eventually it showed him flying in to a grave and then turned to stone which is assumed he died and all that was left of him was the stories he wrote.
A lot of the stories were sad and moving a good porstion were supernatural with ghost, monsters, or hypnosis.
A story of man who enjoyed writing about death and suffering and now he left a legacy in the world of story telling.

Image result for borrowed time This short movie was a story of an old man who goes
a place where his life was changed forever.
It starts with him walking to the ledge of a cliff then
a flashback comes on and shows a younger boy (the
old man) and his father the sheriff. they are riding and bandits try to take the wagon they fought them off. The wagon wrecks and then the Dad falls the son looks over the edge and see him hanging for his life. So the dad hands the son the stock of the gun the son's hand slips and pull the trigger and kills his dad. And back the old man he about commits suicide then sees an old pocket watch of his dads and decides not to jump. Middle Town

Middle Town is about Mary a woman who moved into a new town. This town is full of interesting people the town mechanic who is also how helps at the hospital who's an interesting fellow also the man who does everything and nothing. You see the characters interact with each other in crazy ways but the story tells that no matter how normal the town is there are always the crazy people but that's not a bad thing. In this crazy town everyone cares for each other it shows with the last half. Mary got pregnant and goes to the hospital because she's about to have her son and her friend John the man who does everything but also nothing is also there cause he used a rusty piece of metal to cut himself not that he wanted to die but to feel the rush of  a near death experience. Sadly, John dies and Mary has her kid and names him John and that's where it ends with a story of a life ending and a life starting.

Princess Bride

The Princess Bride is a tale of revenge, action, sword fighting, true love, and comedy. It's a beautiful story about a kid sick in bed and a grandpa who reads him a book called you guessed it the Princess Bride. So he reads the book to his grandson who doesn't like the idea of romance but listens anyway.
This whole movie is a beautiful tale about what a man will go through for his true love with crazy adventures along the way. The world is a crazy with the ROUS, lighting sand, the fire swamp, and the machine. With everything that goes on in this movie, you start to feel for the characters and the world it's a great movie if you haven't seen it I would recommend it.
