Reflecting on the change occurring over the ten years between 1998 and
2008. Blending loss, painful memories, and joyous occasions, curiously he
includes where we might be heading in the future.
At the beginning of this video we
find Kenny walking through what looks to be the rubble of years’ past, with the
sun setting behind him over in the city. The ruble we soon find contains things
such as box TV’s, computers from the Y2K era, phone cords from land lines, a
replica of the tree from the Peanuts Christmas special, a billboard of Johnny
Cash, and the American flag, and that’s only the first verse. He of course is
naming the significance of all these items, but the images become quite self-explanatory
if you lived in that era. For instance, the peanuts tree is the loss of cartoons
meant to bring about a moral or deeper meaning, the box TV’s was the “need”
everyone felt to switch to Flat screen HD TV’s, the billboard being the loss of
Kenny’s and most of Americas inspiration, in country music and as a moral man, and
the American flag being the loss of both Superman and patriotism.
Please read Part 2 for the surprising
optimism at the beginning…
