The film begins in 2013.
Deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, a fracture opens up, that leads to another
dimension. Through the fracture, giant monsters called Kaiju appear. After many
days and countless lives, the lone Kaiju is defeated by human military forces. However,
what seemed to be an isolated attack builds, as more Kaiju begin to come
through the fissure, attacking coastal cities around the Pacific. The World
unites to stop the invaders, and build The Jaeger Program (Jaeger or Jäger is
German for “hunter”): a series of giant mechanical 'monsters,' intended to stop
the creatures. In 2020, seven years after the fracture opened in the Pacific
Ocean, one of the more famous Jaeger duos, Raleigh Beckett and his older
brother, Yancy have become heroes with an impeccable record of defeating
Kaijus. Pilots of the Jaeger named "Gipsy Danger," they are sent off
to stop a Category-3 Kaiju heading towards Anchorage. They begin fighting the
lone Kaiju and rescue a fishing vessel at the same time, which you’re assuming
will be an issue. You’re correct, it distracts them just enough for the Kaiju
to knock out and kill Yancy, therefore leaving Raleigh to bear the neural load
of the Jaeger by himself.
That all happens before the
opening title.
