I finally had the chance to go see Moana the new animated movie about an island girl who journeys across the sea to save her people from the darkness closing in on them.
And can I just say, finally! A movie, a disney movie, ABOUT BROWN PEOPLE! Played by BROWN PEOPLE. WITH TATTOOS! And on top of it all, the movie actually had a plot.
The respect that was put into making this movie is actually really refreshing and touching.
The thing that stuck out to me the most was Maui's story of his adoption by the gods. It may not have stuck out to a lot of people but it did to me. When he said, "the one person who should have loved me threw me to the sea." It felt so real, as someone who is adopted.
I have to congratulate Disney for getting real for once. I absolutely loved Moana and I would definitely see it again.
