A Story Album: American Idiot

One of my favorite albums has always been American Idiot by Green Day. In my opinion, there is not a single bad song on it. Something I didn't always know about this album though, was the fact that it is actually a story told from song to song. There is currently a Broadway play on it. It tells the story of  boy who leaves his hometown, meets a girl, falls in love, gets his heartbroken, and goes back to his hometown. Here is my interpretation of  each song

American Idiot- Pretty much an introduction to the album and shows some of the views of character.

Jesus Of Suburbia- Introduction to the main character of story: Jesus Of Suburbia. The beginning of the song describes his life now: random hookups drugs, and just living the life. He claims there is nothing wrong with him, this is how he is supposed to be. As the song progresses, he becomes increasingly agitated with the town he leaves in. He finally erupts, packs his things, and leaves the town.

Holiday- He is on holiday! He is away from the hateful town and is feeling great!

Boulevard of Broken Dreams- Euphoria has worn off. Our main character is now depressed. He is by himself in a new place thus all the lines about being alone.

Are We the Waiting- He is trying to make sense of all that has gone on to bring him to where he is now. One of the lines "The Jesus of Suburbia,, is a lie' alludes to the fact that he doesn't even know who he is anymore.

St. Jimmy- This is where he takes on an alter ego: St. Jimmy. Jimmy is a maniac

Give Me Novacaine- This song is about Jimmy being high (deep I know)

She's a Rebel- "Jimmy" meets his dream girl, Whatsername.

Extraordinary Girl- This is a typical love song. It describes the relationship between Jimmy and whatsername. Standard affair.

Letterbomb- Whatsername breaks up with Jimmy in a letter. Jimmy is a raging maniac. One of the lines "made me the idiot America" shows exactly how he has become the thing he once hated. The reason whatsername broke up with him was for that reason: he became the American Idiot

Wake Me Up When September Ends: He's depressed about losing it all.

Homecoming- Our main character has had enough. He sheds his false identity of St. Jimmy and goes back the person he once was. He also goes back to town he had been away from for so long, now with hope and a longing to be home.

Whatsername- Recollections of times spent with this girl and in the town and how that time changed him.
