Black Mirror: Nosedive

In continuing with Black Mirror, I wanted to continue with talking about the episode titled Nosedive. This episode hit me hard especially with the ever increasing medium that is social media. In Nosedive, we are met with a world where everything revolves around ratings and social status that is shown through a media lens that's a mix between Instagram and Facebook. Our main character, Lacie, is a 4.2 on the scale of how great a person is. Every interaction in her life revolves around this social medium. People rate her on her interactions, her job requires her to hold a status of at least 3.0 or above, and even her living space is determined by this factor. Lacie prides herself in her progress within this system seeing that there is no issue other than that she has to prove herself to all of those who are above a 4.2. In the story we see her struggle as she tries to buy a better apartment and gain a better job through gaining better rankings, and her biggest gain in ranking would come from her being a maid of honor for her so called best friend. Through trial and tribulations she ends up ruining her ratings because she swears, walks on the road because her rental car broke down, and would even lose points on menial interactions. After a talk with a woman who gave up on the system explains the freedom of living free of a life where she is constantly rated on how she acts. Lacie, taking none of her advice, goes to the wedding after being uninvited due to her nosedive in ratings. Once she shows up, all around her are disgusted at her trying to be genuine because of her rating and is eventually kicked out of the wedding due to a downward spiral in the speech revealing deeper hidden feelings within Lacie.
