Deathnote

Deathnote is an anime series that takes place in Japan.  A normal teenager named Light is at school and walks through the courtyard while he’s heading to class.  He comes across an odd looking notebook with the words Deathnote written on the cover and decides to take it.  Inside he finds written directions that state anyone whose name is written in this book shall die; the victim shall die of a heart attack unless another incident is written next to their name.  These incidents must be within realistic terms and can be as long as what someone can write within six minutes.

These notes come from beings known Shinigami, gods of death, and the notes become a part of the human realm when they touch the ground.  It is a Shinigami’s responsibility to care for their Deathnotes.  The Shinigami that is responsible for Light’s Deathnote is named Ryuk.  He could not have been happier that the notebook landed in the hands of light.

Light is extremely intuitive and ruthless.  After a couple tests of using the book, Light realizes the power that he holds and what he could do.  He becomes judge, jury, and executioner for criminals who have done things horrible enough to be displayed in the news.  Ryuk becomes impressed by the fact that Light has written dozens of names in the book before he has even arrived.  As time goes on Light only begins to write more and more names, killing dozens more criminals.  Light begins to think of himself as the new worlds god.  A new world without crime and only full of goodness.

If you had the power to change the world, would you?  Would you be willing to go to extreme lengths to end crime once and for all?  Are you willing to become something far worse than all the filth this world has to offer?

  1. It's interesting to think about how Light goes from being a normal teenager to believing himself the new god.
