The Secret of Kells is an amazing film. Just gonna get that out there at the start. The animation is, without a question, some of the most beautiful animation I've ever seen in a movie. The art style and how they animate it just really works together to make something that is visually pleasing just to watch, alone from any plot or story, just watching it is fun. I actually found myself thinking, "This is fun to watch." How everything came together on screen was entrancing and captivating.
I've always been a fan of Celtic style artwork, and in fact, have a tattoo in that style, with more planned. The different pieces of that woven into this movie were intricate and very well done. I read that they actually took inspiration from, or maybe directly incorporated, designs from the actual Book of Kells into the movie, and it shows.
The story was great too. I loved the characters they had, and they were all well-crafted. Probably one of my favorite parts though, was the intertwining of some Celtic mythology and Medieval Christian faith. Crom Cruach and Aisling are part of something deeper and older than the monk's Christian faith, at least in that part of the world, and it shows through how it is portrayed.
