As the offseason
began, Thunder fans were excited but nervous. Their biggest star had his contract
run up. Durant was a free agent. He could sign with anyone. There was talks for
a while during the season that he would join John Wall in Washington, where he
grew up. Boston, both the Clippers and the Lakers were said to be strong contenders
for Durant. He was expected to come back to OKC. On July 4, 2016, it all changed. The whole NBA
would be affected. Durant announced his intentions to sign with the Golden
State Warriors. The move was received negatively by the public and NBA
analysts, with many comparing the move to when LeBron James left the Cavs in 2010
to join the Miami Heat. On July 7, the Warriors organization officially
introduced him, signing a two-year, $54.3 million contract with a player option
after the first year.
