Truth Found in Rap: Part 3

One of B.o.B’s tracks on his mixtape “Elements” has me thinking about the power of words and the privilege we were given when Prof Leeper started this blog for all of us to share our thoughts in one place. “H.A.A.R.P” reminds us that words are powerful within the church, the heart, the mind, in school, and within debates…

“Earth moves, observe the truth of what words do
Words do more than just hurt you
Words alone fill up church pews
Words alone change the outcome
Make you reconsider taking nurse school
Words alone make you pay attention
To the problems that you never worked through
Bird food for the mind
Brain washed over time
Life expectancy on the decline
Vaults up in the sky
I look up and I ask why O Lord?
It’s hard to tell what freedom is
When you gotta die for it
And I ain’t got that much time to be waiting
Yo, I guess I just ain’t got the patience
Uh, I’m sick and tired of debating”

Words can persuade, encourage, inspire, teach, comfort, enlighten, hurt, and affirm. The freedom we have as Americans to exchange words in whatever way we chose is wonderful. People die to protect that freedom. So with it, comes responsibility. We have to filter what comes out of our mouths in order to show compassion (or love in action) to others as Christ did.
