This Video is a short film that is a black-and-white, dramatic,
well-crafted one. It's a blend of sad, hopeful and jarring images that create a
bold story, with the message no matter how painful the road we gonna be
alright. There is too much to unpack in this video it would take me weeks to
fully unpack, so I will focus on the beginning and end, but you should watch entirety of it.
Bold isn’t a strong enough word to describe his artistic
drive. See this video is a
journey, taking us through the visual representation of Kendrick’s need for
change in the streets of Compton, while representing how people sometimes just
have to pretend it’s alright. There are images of police brutality, gang wars,
the b-roll footage to capture the future apocalypse of L.A. through shots of Compton,
screams of the people with no were to go, and the church. Kendrick backs the images
with the words, “I remembered you was
conflicted, Misusing your influence, sometimes I did the same, Abusing my power
full of resentment, Resentment that turned into a deep depression, Found myself
screaming in the hotel room, Lucifer was all around, So I kept running, Until I
found my safe haven, I was trying to convince myself the stripes I got, Making
myself realize what my foundation was(In the room, and I run it)But while my
loved ones were fighting the continuous war back in the city, I was entering a
new one, A war that was based on apartheid and discrimination.” During the last line,
a cop shoot a Black man then it faded to white.
