The Witcher: A Grain of Truth

This story in the book The Last Wish is a short story about a monster hunter named Geralt of Rivia. Geralt, an incredibly agile warrior and infamous monster hunter, is matched with an unlikely friend during his travels. After travelling for some time, Geralt came upon a run down manor with grass and flowers growing up high enough to disguise it's path. As he explores the mansion grounds, he hears a loud roar come from the manor. Geralt barges into the house to meet the mansion's current owner, a half human half monster Geralt is caught off guard by this creature as it speaks intelligently to Geralt and introduces himself as Nivellen. The monster hunter, surprised that this creature is able to speak decides not to attack the creature and asks what Nivellen wishes from Geralt. Nivellen offers to have dinner with Geralt just so he is able to have company.

The story devolves into Geralt finding out that Nivellen had been cursed for a long time by a vampire who had been hiding on his grounds, but he was too weak to be able to defeat the vampire. Geralt, against his usual demeanor, decides to help this monster to be freed from his curse and defeats the vampire that had cursed Nivellen. I thought this story was really crucial to Geralt's story line as he begins to deal with several challenges with his beliefs and how he deals with monsters. In this case he let his guard down in order to save someone who on the outside was a monster, but on the inside was still human. This story reflects parts of Beauty and the Beast in a more violent world, but shares some of the same aspects. Even in a world that may sometimes be harsh, it's still important to give people and ideas a chance.
