The Glass Menagerie

The Glass Menagerie is about a family of three in 1937 Saint Louis. It brings us into this family's life as Tom the oldest brother tries to work his hardest while still trying to catch his dreams. Laura, Tom's sister who is not able to work do to her handicap, and Amanda a divorced mother who wishes to marry off her daughter so that she may live a life of leisure since Laura is unable to work.
After reading, and even performing parts of the Glass Menagerie, I have found that this play really captivates me in a strange way. The naturalistic style always is easy for an audience to connect to, due to the nature in which we live. I really identify with Tom especially because he wishes for an escape in a time where he had to do menial work to achieve his far off dreams. In this way, I can connect with this idea because my dreams are often far fetched, then we come to the close of the show. Even after moving away and trying to aim for his dreams, he is still held by the thought of his sister and how she effected his life. I feel that I may experience the same thing as I go out into the world and begin to experience new things. The things from the past should not hold me back, but rather be a reminder from what I have come from and to be responsible for myself and my actions.
