Is our society too consumed with social media? It seems that many people find their self-confidence and joy in how many likes they get on Instagram or Facebook, or how many twitter followers that they have. In church today we talked about how our deepest longing as human beings is to be seen and be known. This is why social media can be toxic because people begin to find their identity in social media rather than in God. Now, I’m not saying that this is the case for everyone, but I know that I myself have found many times where I feel pretty good about myself if I get a lot of likes on my pictures. Isn’t that pretty sad? So many people do not want people to see the real them because they are afraid people won’t like them when they know the not so good stuff. The truth of the matter is that our joy and confidence only comes from God and knowing that he sees us and loves us, not from social media followers or how many likes you get on a picture. We can find relief when we accept that God loves us despite our flaws.
