Molly, a Change of Pace for Lil' Dickey: Part 1

So, this song titled “Molly” by rapper Lil’ Dickey, may seem like just another rap about parting and popping Molly like most stupid rappers that need a big hit, but this song and music video couldn’t be more opposite. This video and song brings LD (Lil Dickey) down to reality, like he’s just another guy in love, without hope of letting go of the feeling.
Dickey starts of his first verse with what is essentially a warning, saying that “this is the softest thing I ever did but… it’s about something that’s really important to me.” And from that moment the audience is made aware that this isn’t his usual bitches and hoe’s crap (thank God), and that was key for him. He didn’t know how this would be received since he had never spoken his heart in his rap, with his other hits being titled things like, $ave Dat Money and Lemme Freak. So this was both a risk for him personally and finically.  He said at one point that he doesn’t typically show sentimentality in his music. However, this was something he was felt needed to be an exception, as it details the realities of having to separate from the girl he loved and still loves, named Molly, to move to Napa, California for his carrier.
The music video starts with him getting ready for a wedding and he is stressing out as if it is his own wedding, but as we find out about two minutes into the video he was attending his ex-lover Molly’s wedding. He continues through the wedding and reception considering if he made the wrong decision putting his carrier before his love. He also knows that if he gave rap up he could get Molly back, simultaneously he struggles knowing that he can’t because he needs to follow his passion, or else he would feel empty in that way. He’s at a crossroad between a rock and a hard place, knowing he cannot forgive himself for choosing one love over the other. His expression in the video is spot on creating an even closer level of sympathy between him and the audience. And with the slow reveal of it not actually being his wedding in the beginning it hits you in a similar way to how LD was hit.

In part two I will go over the chorus and explain the importance of the pill swallowing analogy.
This will be a two-part blog please, read part 2 if interested…
