We Do What We Can Because We Must

The short films we watched in class today all espoused one simple principle. The creators did what they could to make a great short film without overtaxing their resources and abilities. This is a useful thing to remember not only in the animation industry, but also in life as a whole. We look up to the greats in each field. However, what a huge film company can produce, or a well established game developer can put out, is far from what an indie producer can put together in his own time while working a full time job. That doesn’t mean that the indie producer can’t make something worth watching or playing though.

It’s still possible to make great things even without abundant resources, it just requires creativity, some skill, and maybe a little extra work. Student films are a great example of this. Despite operating on a small budget and with other things, like classes and work, filling their time, they can still manage to put out something that engages people and gets their attention. It might not be a finely crafted masterpiece like Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks puts out regularly, but that’s the advantage of having entire departments working on certain parts of each film.
