After their almost total
absence from the music industry, the Goo Goo Dolls came back with the music
video and release of the song “Over and Over.” A sorta sad/happy combination of
musical lyrics about sickness and the eventual release of death, and a more
up-beat rhythm. The video to accompany the song is animated and depicts a man
finding he has brain cancer, then repeating the actions of going to work,
passing out at work, returning to the hospital, then going through recovery,
just to go back to work and pass out again. Each time he goes through the process
he becomes more lonely, losing his red and green friends, his hair, and his
confidence.
“Picking up the pieces out they left
you in again
Love is all you want but you’re never
gonna feel the same
It’s hard to be yourself when everyone
around is changing
Open up your eyes and you’ll never lose
yourself again
And we go over and over and over again
Are ya lost in the past thinking what
might have been
You’re here and you’re now started over
and then
Take it over and over and over again
Turn it up
Turn it up
Old enough to know and young enough to
live again
Stare into the mirror but no one that
you know is there (that you know is there)
Shaking like its cold and no one’s
there to take your hand
I will give you mine and shiver ‘till
you’re warm again
So don’t you look down
And we go over and over and over again
Are ya lost in the past thinking what
might have been
You’re here and you’re now started over
and then
Take it over and over and over again”
The lyrics do speak for
themselves. Not many songs deal with the thought of death as ultimate release
from repetition and loss, and not many need to. But this does pretty good justice
to the topic, and having not heard the band since 7th grade it just
hit me.
