Under the surface of Kelly and Yorkie's relationship is a world that is full of hope, yet holds many broken people. San Junipero is a program built for those who are dying and is an alternate choice for how you wish to spend the rest of your days after you die. Everyone in the program is either dead or dying and is there because they are afraid of what comes after death. Yorkie in real life is actually a vegetable whose family has died and has no one around her. Kelly's family has passed too, her daughter died when she was young and her husband died only a couple of years ago, but did not decide to be placed in San Junipero. Kelly struggle with this as she tries to find what she wishes to do when she dies. Yorkie begs her to stay with her but Kelly still feels a duty to her daughter and husband. As the rest of the story continues, we see Kelly and Yorkie becoming very vulnerable to each other as Yorkie decides to stay in San Junipero while Kelly is still unsure of what she wishes to do. Kelly then decides to visit Yorkie in real life to really understand what she has to go through. There she finds that Yorkie is indeed a vegetable and she is going to die very soon. One of her nurses tells her that he has to marry her in order to decide that she can live within San Junipero since the rest of her family is dead. In spite of her beliefs, Kelly decides that she should marry Yorkie and decides to stay in Sand Junipero with Yorkie since it is what makes her happy anyway.
