In the reading “The Secret of Pixar Storytelling”, it’s said
by Andrew Stanton that you should, “Refine your efforts until you get to the
good stuff. " The films created by Pixar, that were watched on that day,
all exemplified this phrase. Luxo Jr.
showed that inhuman objects, even lamps, can be made into relatable and
enjoyable characters. The Tin Toy
takes what they did with the lamps and tries to add CGI humans into the mix as
well. While the human in the story was not the most lovable thing, it was an
attempt that without would have most likely pushed back Pixar’s movies by a few
years. These movies helped Pixar ‘refine’ their skills and create Toy Story. Geri’s Game was another chance for Pixar to create an endearing
human character, and they arguably succeed. He may not look super realistic,
but the old man in the short film was enjoyable like the lamps. I never felt he
was real, but that didn’t matter to me because I could enjoy the film without
the knowledge of why they might have made it. And I enjoyed the film even more knowing
they had finally gotten “to the good stuff.”
