In class on Thursday we talked about Laura Capon’s post
titled “Weird People”. In her interesting post she has a very good point: “Even
when listening to music or looking at artwork, it's like communicating with the
creator.” That’s actually why I love the Christian Rap genre. In this genre
there is sadness, anger, happiness, just like any other genre of music but with
a twist: it’s not bubbly like Christian Contemporary, but, like Christian
Contemporary, it talks about and glorifies Jesus, some rappers like NF put
their life into their lines. NF’s song “How Could You Leave Us” from his album “Therapy
Session” is a perfect example.
“How Could You Leave Us” is about his mom but, it’s not that
simple. Turns out that his mom was addicted to drugs and had her children taken
away. In the song NF is very emotional because of this topic pointed out by the
crying and breaking down at the end of the song. I don’t know what that feels
like and maybe you do but I love this song because of all of this raw emotion
it shows.
I’m sure I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again: His
music is more real to me than the bubbly music that they play on Christian
radio stations but less misogynistic and rude than that of the main stream rap
and hip-hop stations.
I guess what I’m saying is that media touches lives. In my
case music and comics touch my life. What media touches yours?
NF is a fantastic example of a creator communicating to listeners. "How Could You Leave Us" made me cry first time I heard it, same with the song "Mansion." His music is so raw and touching and you can't help but feel the meaning deeply.
