On Set Experience (or don't let the bees near the 2K) - Coby Solms

This weekend I was on set for the principal photography of At The Movies, a short film directed and written by Huntington University Senior, Mason Bowen. My official role was On Set Still Photographer and BTS, but being experienced in grip work and some cinematography, I was able to help out with lighting and some of the actual principal photography. It was so thrilling to watch the talent perform Mason’s ideas, after poring over the script for days to find the best times to get funny or important scenes photographed. Even though I’ve been on film sets before, the excitement had me smiling and almost slap-happy at certain points.

Everyone, the talent included, meshed and got along very well. The whole crew had so much fun getting to know each other and the talent. In fact, everyone meshed so well that we were adding scenes back into the shot list because the actors were nailing every take. When there was a problem, it was usually unwanted traffic noise in the audio, but it was obviously unavoidable considering we were at the Huntington Drive-In (which is an open field with a couple of buildings scattered around the property.

I learned a lot this weekend on my first official shoot as a college student. For example, bees are attracted to large sources of light: namely, the 2K watt light we had on set. If said bee tries to fly towards the said 2K, it will get stuck in the steel mesh filter and cause smoke to start emanating from the light, causing the whole crew to believe the beloved 2K is on fire. Luckily, the 2K wasn’t on fire, and the bee was just a little crispy.

Stay classy DM115, and don't let the bees near the 2K.
