Smiley Blauert: Telling the Truth - Gospel of Tragedy

The section that I read in Telling the Truth was about how people view different things. It discusses the differences in what the story of Jesus seeing Lazurus dead means and how it can be interpreted. At one point it tells of a class that is reading Shakespeare’s King Lear. The class has the realization that they are truly just poor children, not the kings and queens of the world. In this moment, the kids realize that they are small and insignificant in the world that surrounds them.
When the story turns to Jesus and Lazurus, it talks of how Jesus weeps. People are shocked to see the weeping man. The story told is one all of us should know from the Bible.
The section also discusses how preachers are teachers. They are to hold up the truth for all of us to see. They are supposed to use their imagination and eloquence to show us the truth of God’s.

Towards the end of the section it talks of how we, as filmmakers, are the most powerful preachers because we are unafraid of telling the truth. We are intensely honest and through this we will become stronger at what we do.
