Mouthy Merc

I watched Deadpool over the weekend. Very funny movie, if you're into that sort of humor, and a huge departure from the typical superhero film. It was a gamble, being rated R, and having a fairly small budget, but it paid off. The movie was hugely popular, and it's easy to see why. The comedy is quirky and often unexpected, with 4th wall breaking thrown in at good times, and improv from Ryan Reynolds resulting in some hilarious lines.

One thing that caught my attention though, was how it related, or didn't, to the stuff we've been talking about in class regarding fairy tales. Now, granted, superhero movies aren't exactly fairy tales. Deadpool really caught my attention though, because there doesn't appear to be any transformation. He begins the movie as a sarcastic mercenary, and ends it much the same way. In fact, in significant contrast to Black Panther's moment of mercy and self realization at the end of Captain America: Civil War, Deadpool just straight up murders his enemy. It does make it seem a bit more relatable though. Humans do undergo transformation, but we're usually pretty slow with it.
