Truth in Fairy Tales

“You enter the extraordinary by way of the ordinary.”

Whenever I read fairy tales I always get this sense of wonder that is fleeting. This sense that only in a fairy tale world could life be exciting and magical. But what if that isn’t true? What if the world in which we live, the reality we see, is too magical for us? Perhaps we look too hard for the extraordinary and forget what we’re really looking for.

“Beasts talk and flowers come alive and lobsters quadrille in the world of the fairy tale, and nothing is apt to be what it seems.”

Just as in life, eventually the truth comes out in fairy tales. The monstrous creature in the woods is a gentle beast, the man hanging out and partying with his friends hides how sad and angry he is. These things may come off as surprising, but they aren’t. Truth isn’t meant to be this wonderful amazing thing; truth is always in your grasp. Just waiting for you to pull it towards you. You shouldn’t be surprised or stunned by the truth, you should be able to look at it and realize it was something that you already knew.
