Kubo Review

Kubo

Magic, interesting characters, cool music, and adventure is a pretty great line up of movie aspects. And Kubo delivers these, and more, in spades.

Man, and I thought the walk from Wright to Becker was bad...

Perhaps the most eye catching and wonderful part of the film was the stop motion. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of the style ever but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fluid, fast and left little to actually criticize. (The fight scenes I felt shined especially.) It was interesting to watch and not distracting to the events themselves.

The characters of the movie were rich and the world was interesting and engaging. The movie had a good pace that kept things rolling along nicely and avoiding any patch of too much exposition or action.

However, the premise both Kubo's quest wasn't my favorite part of the movie. (SPOILERS AHEAD) The idea of his quest being to collect three parts of a magic armor, even if it was set up and not just plot convenient, has been done and redone and Kubo didn't exactly throw a unique spin on it. It kept it exciting and each piece had a challenge but it was still a simple McGuffin Quest of self discovery. I did like the ending with how Kubo finds who he is and comes to terms with the events though. Not necessarily unique but still potent and offset some of cliche-ness of the McGuffin Quest.

I did have a great time watching this film and am glad I saw it. I would certainly recommend it and I certainly have a better outlook on Stop-Motion now.
