Saving Mr. Banks

Saving Mr. Banks is one of the most emotional Disney movies that has been made in recent years. It tells the story of Pamela Travers and Walt Disney's interaction when they met to try to create the iconic Mary Poppins. Before Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke sang and danced, there was Pamela Travers. She created the beloved characters and then had the worst time trying to part with them. As the movie progresses, she fights with Disney and has constant flashbacks from her childhood with her father. It keeps revealing that many of the characters personalities are mirrored in her own past. Her father was her most important person and he died. This results in modeling Mr. Banks after him and even her changing her name to make her alias her father's first name--Travers. She reveals that Mary Poppins did not come to save the children but to save their father--the father she could not save.
This movie is one of the most heartfelt and heartbreaking that Disney has created. The movie examines guilt, facing ones past, and finally, moving forward from that past. This movie so beautifully takes one woman's journey with Walt Disney and portrays such raw human emotions behind her rough exterior. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson so wonderfully take this story and bring it to life along with all the fun that audiences have enjoyed from the songs, dances, and the laughter that they already knew.
