Summary:
Wyatt, who goes by "Captain
America" (Peter Fonda), and Billy (Dennis Hopper) are two hipsters dressed
in leather jackets and buckskin pants. Wyatt is charismatic and outgoing, while
Billy is somewhat distant and afraid of outsiders.
The pair smuggles cocaine into America on their motorcycles and sells
it to a man (Phil Spector) in a Rolls Royce. They shove the money made into a
plastic tube hidden by the fuel tank of Wyatt's chopper. They head east and at nights,
they set up camp in some woods.
The duo meets and picks up quite a few characters along their
journey, one of which is a hitchhiker (Luke Askew) trying to get to his commune.
Life in the commune seems hard to Wyatt and Billy when they visit. As the
bikers leave, the hitchhiker (known only as "stranger on highway")
gives Wyatt some LSD for the road.
On their way out of town, the pair is thrown in jail for
"parading without a permit.” Luckily, they hit it off with a lawyer and
drunkard George (Jack Nicholson). He helps them get out of jail and decides to head
to New Orleans with them. Wyatt and Billy introduce George to marijuana as they
are camping one night.
As the road runners travel, they begin to observe that Americans
talk a lot about freedom, but are terrified of anyone who actually showcases
it.
