Sweet Home Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama is arguably one of my favorite movies. It's funny and heartwarming and Reese Witherspoon is just charming and adorable. It starts with a New York fashion designer (Witherspoon) who is recently engaged to the son of the mayor. This creates issues for the young woman seeing as she has already been married once when she was young and her husband refuses to give her a divorce. She travels to her small hometown in Alabama to continue to ask her husband for a divorce. Chaos ensues as she is brought face to face with many people of her past. We soon discover that she has lied about her wealthy Southern roots back in New York when she is actually just a girl from humble beginnings. Her fiancé comes to Alabama and discovers her previous way of life and still wants to marry her. However, her first husband is clearly still in love with her and she struggles to think of a life away from this town again.
Although this movie is clearly a stereotypical "chick flick", I think it still has a valuable message in it. I think it shows that you really can't forget where you came from. It's so much a part of who we are. If we want to move past it then that's one thing, but our pasts have already shaped us as individuals so it's really impossible to run from it as so many try to do. This movie is simple, funny, and sweet and shows audiences that you can always go home.
