Another short story that I came
across was called The Little Match Girl, which was about a little girl in a
cold and snowy place trying to sell people matches. She was just sitting
in the cold lighting matches trying to get some heat and light. She was
getting visions of what it would be like to be in a house with food and a
Christmas tree. You also have to read the story to understand what is
happening, but if you just watch the film, you can tell that the little girl is
freezing to death as she sits outside. In the written story, the reader
sees that the grandmother, who has died, told her that when a star falls, a
soul ascends to God. The little girl quickly lights all of the matches so
she can be with her grandmother in heaven. When all of the matches run
out, she falls back against the wall. The grandmother comes for the girl
and brings her to heaven. They are with God, and there will no longer be
hunger, cold, anxiety. There will be no more tears. We also see
this theme in the Bible in Revelation 7:16-17.
The story is so compelling by the way it is set up, which makes the reader really feel what the girl is going through. I wanted to be someone walking past her so I could help her. The film moved me emotionally as it depicted her sadness and depression. It moved me to feelings of helplessness. However, when I read the story and realized that it was a religious story that was originally written by a Danish poet, Hans Christian Anderson, it brought a new vision into my head. It was so cool to see just a sad story turn all the way around into a joyful story where the girl escaped her troubles and was able to be with God.
I believe there were multiple themes. There was the image of hope and hopelessness. There was the theme of the image of eternity with God, as well as helping people to know what kids can go through. This film and story were very touching and helped bring recognition to the mission of children who suffer with the cold and hunger. This was very meaningful as my emotions were touched in many ways.
