In class last Tuesday we discussed
the topic of children’s media and how authors should approach writing for
children. Lewis said that the best way to approach it is by respecting your
audience and digging deep into your own personal experiences. The more that you
share with your audience, the more they will be interested. Lewis implies that
the more you share, the more you enrich someone else’s experience and the
better they can connect with you. When writing to children do we just want to
keep kids happy, or do we want to challenge them with our thoughts? It is
important that we do not just write to give them what they want, but rather
write to challenge and delight them with personal experiences. Do children
really want to read a story or watch a movie about what is right and wrong? I
know I probably wouldn’t. When authors try to proclaim what is right and wrong,
it makes them think they are superior to the child. Authors should understand
that children want to be able to expand their imagination and be delighted when
they read a story or look at a piece of artwork. The digger you deep into your
own personal experiences as an author, the more delighted your audience will
be.
