Arsenic and Old Lace

Arsenic and Old Lace is an old Cary Grant movie. I’m not sure if the creators were aiming for a thriller, but they ended up with something of a dark comedy. The film itself is a great laugh, and the actors did their jobs well. One thing that really stood out to me, besides the lack of color, was the innovative use of camera angles. Often they would use shadows for effect, or not quite show what they were talking about, but it was heavily implied. In a lot of cases it just added to the comedy.

One of the best characters, without a doubt, is Teddy. He’s the main character’s brother, and played by John Alexander. He’s slightly off his rocker, and believes that he is Teddy Roosevelt. This results in the other characters having to pander to him throughout the movie and pretend that he is the president and that they are various members of the government and such. His interactions overall added a nice touch of comedy and were a nice complement to the other characters of the movie. Although older, being released in 1944, this movie is a fine example of filming techniques back in the day, and has a great cast.
