Let Down Your Hair

Last weekend I watched Tangled with some friends. Another classic fairy tale given a different spin by Disney, this film is a pleasure to watch. The characters are well written, and the addition of Pascal, Rapunzel's intelligent chameleon companion, adds a great layer of humor to the movie. The animation is beautiful, and I really have to praise the artists here, because all of the backgrounds and terrain/environment is just so well done that it almost distracts from the characters sometimes.
In addition, as I paid closer attention to the plot, I caught the progression that we've been discussing in class. Now, obviously, the story of Rapunzel is a fairy tale, so it follows that it would contain elements of such, but the first time I watched it they didn't really click for me. It was just a movie to watch for entertainment (Although there's nothing wrong with that if you ask Mamet). The second time around, with the addition of the reading and knowledge from Intro to DMA I was able to actually pick out stuff from the characters' development. Flynn, or Eugene, gradually turning from a suave, charismatic swindler into more of a hero character, with a sense of morals and selflessness is a great example of this. There's a great scene near the very end of the movie where he's fatally wounded, and Rapunzel tries to use her hair to heal him. Instead of letting her save his life, and remaining in the hands of Gothel forever, he instead cuts her hair and gives up his life for hers. Then, in a twist, he's healed by one of her tears. There's almost something biblical about the whole thing, just a hint.
