Sand Castles and Trains

Hoedeman does a masterful job of animation. His pieces Sand Castle and Tchou-Tchou are a pleasure to watch, and they really make me think about how he put them together. Hoedeman’s creativity shines through in his work. Besides that, of course, is the story behind them. Tchou-Tchou is about two block children who create their own entertainment, but it’s constantly destroyed by a dragon. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Genesis at some points, with the two children being Adam and Eve, and the dragon being the serpent. Besides all that though, the end of the film is delightful, when the children turn the dragon into a train.

Sand Castle is also a great piece, and to me watching it was even better than Tchou-Tchou, because of the animation. The sand was really well done and kept me engrossed beyond the story. The overall message of the film that I got was one of hope though. Despite the destruction of everything, there’s the possibility to rebuild and come back the same, if not better, as before. It’s something that I model my life on. God can always help us pick up the pieces and rebuild, no matter what we go through in life.
