Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone - Coby Solms

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s (Philosopher’s) Stone is the first movie in the Harry Potter series. Christopher Columbus directed it, and it released in the US and the UK on November 16th, 2001. We begin the story with Rubeus Hagrid flying into Surrey, England to deliver an infant Harry Potter to his awfully neglectful relatives. Then we fast-forward to when he turns 11; he quickly discovers that the scar on his forehead was given to him by an evil wizard, Lord Voldemort, and Harry learns he’s a famous wizard, based solely on his ability to survive an attempt on his life from Lord Voldemort.

This magnificent film explores Harry’s first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He meets new friends: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, defeats a troll in the girls’ lavatory and makes the Quidditch team as Seeker for the House of Gryffindor, to name a few highlights.

A lot of controversies have surrounded this series since the book was released in 1997 in the UK and 1998 in the US. It has been criticized by numerous religious groups and even forbidden in some countries because of accusations that the novels promote witchcraft and other “evils.” But a lot of people, myself included believe that the books and films exemplify significant viewpoints, including the power of martyrdom and the ways in which people's decisions shape their personalities.

Oh, and Snape is my favorite.
