This weekend, I watched The
Shallows, which I have wanted to see since it came out, but I was
relatively nervous to see what it would entail.
I watched one of the original jaws movies when I was younger and I had
nightmares of sharks doing crazy things, which is a completely different story. As I grew older, however, I was not as scared
watching those movies, which I now find funny because they are so fake and
unreal. However, I was longing for a
newer edition of Jaws that was more realistic.
This might have been too much to ask because I would assume making a
shark in a real movie is pretty hard.
At the
beginning of the movie, we learn that the main character’s mother has died and
she has gone to the beach to get away from life and have time for her
life. The addition of Spanish speakers
to the movie was a great move to add suspense while everything was
unfolding. I don’t think that the
purpose was supposed to be another Jaws, at least I hope not, because there was
not much resemblance to the original Jaws.
With this being said, I think that it was a good, suspenseful movie, but
you can’t do a lot with a story that is only in one setting throughout the
movie. An aspect I didn’t like was how
predictable everything was and how the shark seemed almost too fake for
me. I did however notice that the
injured bird stayed with the woman throughout the movie after she helped it to
be able to get away. It was pleasing to
see a form of peace and friendship in what was to be a suspenseful and dramatic
thriller.
All in all,
it wasn’t a horrible movie, but it was rather boring at times, so I would only
give it a 6 out of 10. There wasn’t much
to deal with since it was a small story in one location. However, I would still recommend watching the
movie if you have a lot of free time and are in the mood for a different
movie.
