The Princess Diaries

The Princess Diaries has become a priceless classic. With Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, this movie just oozes charm. However, the awkwardness of Anne Hathaway's Mia Thermopolis totally embodies all the feelings of high school. Mia soon finds out that her long lost grandmother is actually the queen of a small European country to which she is the heir after her father's death.
This movie, though totally unrealistic, yet also every teenage girls dream to discover that she's a princess, accurately describes all the emotions of growing up and discovering who you are. Mia is so lost and labeled as a nerd and outcast. She embodies the usual high school girl trying to find out who she is. She's concerned with school, her job, and her crush on the local heartthrob--now add the fact that she is now also a princess. This crazy circumstance is unrealistic, yes, but also amplifies all the feelings that most teenagers feel as they are going through these crazy years. At the end she finally decides to accept her title as princess of Genovia and accept herself as someone special, but also simply Mia Thermopolis. This small realization is what makes the movie so relatable. Finally accepting yourself for who you are at this age is such a special and wonderful thing. It's hard, and it's sometimes messy and not without complications, but when it finally happens--it's beautiful.
I think this movie does a wonderful job of portraying all the emotions of high school, all the awkwardness of being a teenager, and all the wonderful feelings when you finally feel like yourself.
